I am an RN in the St. Louis area where the working conditions are getting extremely difficult to bare. Management is cutting staffing to the bare minimum causing an unsafe environment for our patients and putting our license ar risk of being revoked.

Somethings got to be done, and soon before people start getting hurt. We are here for the people and management is putting a wedge between us and the patient.

    It’s time for a change.

AGED CARE MATTERS.Staff working in the AGED CARE SECTOR have NEVER been under the pressure that they are at the moment we ned to see changes .I love my JOB but I also respect myself as a person and know that the path AGED CARE is leading down at the moment is not a good one .May be good for the employers but not for staff trying to cope under what is becoming VERY difficult and stressful conditions. So AGED CARE NURSES please let us all stick together even if it means we have to speak up which some of us do not like to do.All we want is to be able to provide QUALITY AGED CARE and have WAGE PARITY.

I work as an A.I.N in a HIGH CARE private facility. An A.I.N is An Intelligient Nurse. We are an integral part of the TEAM.Many staff working in the AGED CARE sector look forward to and WANT to be licensed and also want WAGE PARITY with our PUBLIC and PRIVATE SYSTEM colleagues.A NURSE is a NURSE no matter what setting they work in.Members of the N.S.W.N.A who work in the AGED CARE sector need to GET UP and GET ACTIVE a UNION is only as good as its members.2009 will be a year full of challenges let us meet them head on TOGETHER.

I work as an AIN in a private aged care facility. I was recently told by a member of management that qoute ” I had to be NOT so nice”. To me being a nurse in any part of the medical system, being “nice” is all about being a nurse, cause i sure as hell would not be doing the job for the money.
As an AIN, i attend to personal care of a resident daily, this includes, showering, drying, dressing, toileting, applying prescribed creams, ointments, eye drops, nebulisers, inhalers, ear drops, wound care, assisting with feeding some residents, pressure area care, documentation, doctors visits, families whom need support regularly. Emotional needs of residents and there families, continence assessments, pain assessments, risk acknowledgements, ACFI, care plans, recording of bowels, BP. pulse, temperatures, weights, U/A’s, delivering of meals to residents in rooms, making beds and changing sheets, towels. We deal with death and dealing with the emotional stress ourselves but are always there to assist the family through the most tramatic stage of losing a loved one. I have cried with residents, i have cried with residents families and have cried alone. And there is most probably alot more and all this in 1 shift. PLUS management down your throat cause you may have forgotten something or not had time to do something in your shift and all this for not even 20 bucks an hour. COME ON. i can work in a supermarket putting cans of baked beans on a shelf for twice as much an hour as I am getting now. BUT I do this job because i care. Believe me I am now seriously thinking its not worth the stress and pain of continuing to do this job. Be fair not everyone is cut out for a job like this. Look after ALL our nurses, no matter what sort of nurses they are, cause all nurses are worth every cent the get or at the moment they DON’T get…

Residents in nursing homes are much sicker and have many more medical problems than they did 2 years ago. The nursing home I work permanent night shift in has become an acute medical ward situaion and will continue this way due to our aging population and the increased demand on nursing homes.
The ratio of nurses to residents must be standardised. I am the only registered nurse working in a 100 bed nursing home on night shift. I have 4 assistants in nursing working with me who attend to all personal care for the residents but I am responsible for any and all medical issues solely on my own.
In a hospital situation the ratio of patients to nurses is no more than 15:1 yet mine is 100:1. I am exhausted and very concerned about the level of care I can continue to deliver to the residents of the nursing home. The government must step in and develop a a fair and reasonable ratio of nursing staff to patients in aged care (especially on night shift).

I recently read that the government is handing out $6000 to attract nurses that have left the profession back to nursing. What’s the use in giving a short term solution? Just improve the conditions and all will be fixed. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Was expecting a little more from the current goverment.

Things are not improving in the AGED CARE SECTOR.Staff are gettting stressed to the max because we are always working short staffed .All we want is a fair go for residents and a fair go for us.Lets hope things improve soon for all our sakes.

  9. Comment. 1389 - September 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm Charmaine says:

Nurses are not valued at all by our management or by our health department. Thank heavens our communities respect & value us because we certainly aren’t here for the money!

Nurses working in the Aged Care Sector are under immense pressure at the moment. With no staff to resident ratios in place providers are cutting staff numbers trying to save money.Let us continue to put pressure on the government to make providers accountable for where taxpayers money is being spent. To all the fabulous staff working in AGED CARE keep up the fabulous work and keep fighting for QUALITY IN AGED CARE.
